Microsoft's Exchange Server has been widely adopted as the premier groupware application. With the increasing number of e-mail to be archived, and the corresponding database growth, comes the need to protect this critical corporate information. It is essential for administrators to back up and restore an Exchange server with little or no impact on users. The Microsoft Exchange Application Plugin Module (APM) for NetVault provides increased application availability via fast, online backup of Exchange databases in Windows NT and Windows 2000 environments. Now available - Support for Exchange 2000! One of the new concepts in Microsoft Exchange 2000 is the storage group, a grouping of databases that share a single transaction log set and therefore a single point of administration, backup, and restore. Multiple databases per storage group can be created, and multiple storage groups are possible. This means that numerous separate databases are possible on one Exchange 2000 server. Storage groups are the unit of backup, enabling administrators to back up an entire storage group so only one copy of the system transaction log set must be written to tape. At the same time, however, each database can be restored individually while all of the other databases are still online and servicing other users. This allows for very fast restoration from backup that affects a minimal number of users. To provide greater flexibility and granularity for data protection, the Exchange 2000 APM features:
