![]() BACKUP+/iX and NetBase work together The combination of BACKUP+/iX and NetBase is a powerful solution for a highly-available, disaster-tolerant environment. BACKUP+/iX's online backup capability permits daily secured backups while users are fully operational, while NetBase Shadowing provides a continuous backup to a warm standby system. BACKUP+/iX optimized for NetBase BACKUP+/iX is optimized for use with NetBase in various ways:
While most of the focus of disaster tolerance with NetBase Shadowing is placed on the switchover to the secondary system following a failure of the primary system, the recovery procedure back onto the primary system once it has been stabilized cannot be overlooked. BACKUP+/iX provides the minimal recovery time in this situation due to its unique implementation. Unlike all other online backup products, BACKUP+/iX captures and preserves all transactions that occur during the backup. On restore, these transactions are used to roll the system forward to the way it appeared upon the completion of the backup. Other online backup products use a before-image logging technique with a rollback recovery, which recovers the system to the way it appeared at the beginning of the backup. The benefit for NetBase Shadowing recovery becomes clear when considering the procedure for switching over from the active (formerly secondary) system back to the repaired primary system. At this point, the normally secondary system is the active system, with current data and logged-on users. It is necessary to take a backup of this system and restore it onto the primary system and then switch the users back to the primary system. With BACKUP+/iX, the backup can be done online while users continue to work. Once completed, the backup can be restored onto the primary system, quickly recovering it to the point in time when the backup was completed. It is then necessary to post only the shadowed transactions that occurred on the active system back to the primary system between the time that the backup of the secondary system finished and the restore onto the primary system was completed. With BACKUP+/iX, that time is minimized because the shadowed transaction volume is much lower than it would be with other backup products, which would require all the transactions since the start of the backup of the secondary system to be posted. Other benefits Besides its high level of compatibility and interoperability with NetBase, BACKUP+/iX provides several other benefits:
